A Brief History
The Canberra District Wine Region, of which Yass Valley is part, has an interesting history which began with the pioneering efforts of various property owners. While vineyards existed in the region at the end of the nineteenth century, the last of the original wineries closed its doors in 1908. It wasn’t until 1971 that a resurgence took place. It was in this year that the late Dr Edgar Riek planted vines where Lake George Winery now resides and John Kirk established Clonakilla near Murrumbateman. Shortly after, in 1973, Helm Wines was established by Ken and Judith Helm. Since this time, the Canberra District Wine Region has continued to grow into the increasingly popular cool climate destination it now is!
