Yass Town

Yass lies on the junction of the Hume and Barton Highways and serves as an important interchange, connecting Sydney, Melbourne and the Australian Capital Territory.

The first survey of the town was conducted in 1834 and the township was officially gazetted in 1837.   The main street is lined with beautiful historic buildings and the Information Centre has walk and drive guides mapping and providing details for these sites.

Some of the towns other attractions include; the Yass & District Historical Museum, Yass Railway Heritage Centre and the National trust property Cooma Cottage.   Cooma Cottage was the home of the great Explorer Hamilton Hume and is also the beginning of the 440km Hume & Hovell walking Track from Yass to Albury.  The track marks the route taken by the explorers when searching for a direct route from Sydney to Melbourne.

Yass has a good balance of large chain stores and many great local specialty shops for all your retail needs.

The town has three great playgrounds for the children to play and each has its own attraction.  Coronation Park is well known for its towering spiral slide and is conveniently located next to the Visitor Information Centre and has free BBQ's.  Banjo Paterson Park has playground equipment suitable for smaller children, lots of shade and is central to all the shops and cafe's.  River Bank Park is located at the Yass River where ducks freely swim and boasts new playground equipment for all ages in a picturesque setting, also with free BBQ's.
