Some History of Bowning

Bowning NSW is a picturesque village located 14km west of  Yass along the Hume Highway. One of the earliest settlements in the region, this village is home to a renewed and growing community. Bowning lies at the foot of Bowning Hill, which is 796 metre tall and is the landmark that named the village, coming from the indigenous word meaning ‘big hill’. The town echoes a colourful past with its old Trooper Cottages, Cobb & Co Coaching Station and two beautiful churches, the Anglican & Catholic. Bowning is now a relaxed artistic community  full of wonderful experiences just waiting to be discovered!  

Rollonin Cafe 

The Rollonin Cafe is a family owned cafe, located only seconds away from the Hume Highway. The Rollonin Cafe is your cafe if you are looking for rustic views, country hospitality and a great food! The cafe itself is set in a ‘slab hut’ designed and built to replicate local buildings from the 1800’s, the cafe offers an authentic country experience for everybody.   You will travel back in time with the interior walls lined with newspapers dated back from the early 1900’s and a beautiful cottage garden surrounding the cafe. Say hello to charming farm animals including Mac the Clydesdale, Daisy the Cow, Woolly the Sheep and Wally the Emu, just to name a few that are close enough to pat! This cafe is perfect for the entire family!

Bowning Antique Centre

When visiting why not drop into Aladdin’s Cave better known as the Bowning Antique Centre. Just like in the ancient fairy tale you will surely find something to suit every person. Items range from beautiful antique furniture, light fittings, glassware, china and ceramics to antiques of the future. Additionally there are heaps of collectables including prints, lithographs, etchings and movie posters along with retro jewellery (1920s to 1970s), garagenalia, tools, sports cards, bar and hotel ephemera, badges, Coca Cola memorabilia and lots of passenger ship and airline memorabilia and ephemera. A real treasure!

Crisp Gallery  & The Field of Dreams Cafe

Crisp Glass Australia is an extraordinary Gift Gallery of local award winning glass by owner and artist Peter Crisp. On premises along with the glass gallery is also a pelargonium nursery, cafe and restaurant making it the perfect venue for a wedding, bus groups and tour through the extensive gardens.

The Field of Dreams Cafe is located on the Hume Highway further south of Bowning NSW. The cafe is held within the Crisp Gardens, with beautiful landscapes and galleries surround to make a full experience of the delicious food and drink on offer. Open from 8am – 4pm this is the perfect location for a quick lunch, or a relaxing stop.

Bowning Hotel

It is rumoured that Henry Lawson and Banjo Paterson sat at the Bowning Hotel having a drink and continuing the famous bulletin debate. The Bowning Hotel has been open for more than 100 years, it is a historic landmark for Bowning.

The Bowning Hotel is a fully licensed venue which offers a friendly and relaxing atmosphere. They have ATM and TAB facilities, a fully enclosed entertainment area with TV, Pool Table, Karaoke machine and wood heating in Winter. Patrons are often seen utilising the lovely wide verandas on warm days. A Courtesy Bus is available for group bookings.
