Looking for something super fun to do with the kids these school holidays? Why not take them on a family adventure in Yass Valley!
Family Animal Therapy
Big and little kids love Mac the Clydesdale and his animal friends from the Rollonin Cafe. Visitors can enjoy delicious country style meals with a big dash of country hospitality. Everyone will like meeting the friendly staff who dress in clothing from a bygone era. With indoor and outdoor seating as well as plenty of grassed areas, there’s lots of space to stretch those little legs. The Rollonin Cafe is just off the Hume Highway in Bowning, making it a fantastic family friendly stop.
Family fun even for the ‘wee’ little ones
Underground adventure awaits at Careys Cave in Wee Jasper, where you will find amazing limestone rock formations. It’s a fun geology lesson without a whiteboard in sight! At the end of the tour children can pick up and feel crystals and various kinds of rocks. Another fun family activity is to pack a picnic and visit one of five Wee Jasper Reserves. Facilities at each of the reserves vary from primitive through to basic. Billy Grace reserve has hot showers, flushing toilets and potable water as well as a small office that sells basic items. Unpowered camping is also permitted at all of the reserves, for a small fee. The kids can have fun skimming rocks across the Goodradigbee River, or perhaps fishing, canoeing or a refreshing swim.
Chocolate, pizza and vino
Treat the family with an outing to Robyn Rowe’s Chocolates in Murrumbateman. You may even see Robyn and her team hand crafting chocolates through the viewing window. Robyn’s chocolates are made with ‘highest quality imported Belgian Callebaut Fair Trade couverture’. As a result they are deliciously smooth, glossy and creamy. With hot chocolates, a selection of games and space to run around, Robyn Rowe Chocolates offers a nice escape in a beautiful rural setting.
While in Murrumbateman, why not explore one of many family friendly wineries? Four Winds Vineyard has a great outdoor space for kids to expel a bit of energy. With a newly introduced cheese fridge, you can put together your own platter of delicious produce to enjoy with a wine of your choosing. Fill the kids little bellies with delicious wood fired pizzas, while taking in the fresh country air and warm summer sun. Tallagandra Winery has recently installed a brand new playground to keep the kids happy, while the adults taste test a vino or two. Wins Creek Meadery boasts a unique experience with a cathedral beehive, where you can see busy bees at work. The cafe offers delicious meals made with fresh produce, matched to homemade honey mead.
Budding train enthusiast heaven
Young train enthusiasts will love the model train display at the Yass Railway Museum. It’s sure to also impress the young at heart. The kids can live out their Thomas the Tank Engine fantasies, with static steam engines they can ‘drive’. Housed in the original station building (c1891) the museum boasts the shortest platform in Australia as well as a host of railway memorabilia.
If the kids still haven’t had enough running around, take them to Coronation Park near the Yass Valley Information Centre. It’s a big hit with kids; with swings, monkey bars, a jungle gym and a height defying curly slide. They will never want to leave! The staff can provide you with even more fun things to do during your visit to Yass Valley.
