Wineries
Winemaking first began in Yass Valley in the 1850's when the early settlers, inlcuding Hamilton Hume, planted vines.
Today there are over 130 wineries with over 30 cellar doors in the Yass Valley and Canberra District.
Yass Valley's cool climate area, with its dry autumns, is ideal for allowing the grapes to ripen fully. Over 26 styles of wine are created in the region, ranging from Reislings to the up and coming "next best thing" Shiraz Viogniers, Cabernet Sauvignons and Merlots. Many of these wines are gaining significant popularity as they garner reputations, awards and trophies both nationally and internationally.
Adding to the attraction of the Yass Valley wineries is the ease with which wine lovers can move between first class vineyards, restaurants, boutique accommodation, the many galleries and heritage sites of Yass Valley and also the numerous attractions of our Nation's Capital, over the course of a weekend.
