BowningBowning is situated 15 km from Yass on the Hume Highway. The village of Bowning was one of the earliest settlements in the district due to its location on the Port Phillip Road, now known as the Hume Highway.
On the outskirts of the village is Bowning Hill with an altitude of 796 metres above sea level. Reference was made to this landmark in the journal of Hume & Hovell during their exploration of the area in 1824.
Historic buildings in town include the Cobb & Co Coaching Station on Bowning Road (built between 1850 and 1870) and the local school (1849), one of the first schools to be established in inland New South Wales. Bowning Railway Station was built in 1876 and closed in 1992, while the Commercial Hotel, built in the 1870's, has recently been renovated and today operates as one of the social hubs of the district. Bowning also has two beautiful old churches, the Catholic Church (1909) and St James Anglican Church (1879).
Today, Bowning is home to the very popular Roll On In Cafe, Clearview Alpacca Farm and Peter Crisp Art Glass.
